PATTERN MAKING: VISUAL SAMPLING, PART 2

More stills from unusual places.  The photos were taken from more wall art in Makati, the shores of Mindoro, parking lots and even your favorite fast food joint.  These images serve as a reminder to where I’ve been in the past few months.  They may not tell the complete story, but they’re clues, nonetheless.

Pictures: Malasimbo 2012

It was a great turnout for this year’s Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival in Puerto Galera, Mindoro.  Despite complaints I’ve heard from speaking with people from different groups and barkadas, this much I can say: this year’s headliner (Joe Bataan) lived up to expectations, and our local artists more than held their own.  Props to everyone who performed and made this year’s version a memorable one.

Pattern Making: Visual Sampling from Walls and Pavements

It’s been a busy month for us here at New Perspectives as projects have been popping up here and there.  We’ll make sure to keep you guys updated with all the things that have happened as soon as we’re ready.  For now, I just wanted to share with you all a little ongoing photo project that I’ve been working on.

Lately, I’ve been fascinated with visual patterns.  These patterns are found anywhere, but the fast pace of the city life leave them largely unnoticed.  Upon closer inspection, however, framing fragments of pavements, paintings and doodles can lead to some very interesting results.  Just like in music, artworks can be sampled and broken down into smaller pieces, re-imagined through the lens.  These are just a few of what I’ve taken in the past few months.

More to come in the following months!

Looking Ahead: Malek

Sound designer.  Composer.  Arranger.  Producer.  These are some words that accurately describe one Malek Lopez.  As part of Rubber Inc., Malek is also one of the pioneers of IDM and Electronic music here in the country.  Oh, and did we mention that he’s a standup guy gracious enough to invite us over to his very own Sweet Spot Studios and have a few words with us?  Watch out for our feature coming next week!

Improvisations: Sloj and Fred (Part 1)

One of the most exciting aspects of musical improvisation is knowing when the musicians find their groove.  First-time collaborations are a lot like learning to ride a bike: wobbly and a bit cautious at the beginning, but then they start picking up some serious steam once a sense of familiarity is established.  With Sloj on the MPC and Fred Sandoval on the guitar, they really began hitting their stride with this particular jam and left our jaws dropped.  In fact, we could no longer contain our approval during the jam, as you can probably hear when you watch the video.

We highly recommend you download the full, uncut version of this jam by clicking on the link below.

Subflex @ B-Side, November 2: Sights and Sounds

Another lethal dose of Hip-Hop music last Wednesday night at B-Side as this Subflex event showcased the some of the country’s most progressive personalities and ensembles.  The night featured performances by Miscellaneous, Skarm (with Lloyd from the Pharm), Protege, MDK, members of the Fliptop Battle League and the rest of the Ampon crew as well as sets from Caliph8 and Pasta Groove, among others.  Here are a few photos to give you an idea of how the night went:

For more photos from this wonderful night of tight beats and improvisations, you can check out our Facebook page.  As an added bonus, we’re also sharing with you audio snippets from some of the artists that performed that night.  Just click on the link at the bottom of the page.  We hope to see you at the next SubFlex event, happening next month at the same venue!
